Assignment #4
“Juxtapose”
For this assignment you will need two objects. One can be fabricated and or found the other must be a “readymade.” You will transform the surface of one of the objects with the application of texture. You will then devise a system to connect these two objects. The juxtaposition of your objects should transform their meaning and use. Your goal is to develop a dynamic and meaningful relationship between your objects. Keep in mind the objects created by the Surrealists of the early 1900s. For this assignment you can draw on skills you already possess. Can you carve and or fabricate in wood, do you know how to use paper mache, to sew, weld, blow glass, knit, crochet etc.
Step 1
Make and or select your object:
Then buy, find, liberate, borrow a large amount of some material, the choice of material is up to you, but it must be something that can be applied to a surface to create a texture. For example nails, staples, nuts, bolts, screws, rivets, tape, tacks, push pins, string, thread, twine, tar, glue, feathers, seeds, flowers, leaves, pebbles, sand the possibilities are pretty much endless. You MUST use AT LEAST two materials but NO MORE than three to transform the surface of one of your objects. This should be an in depth exploration of texture. Keep in mind all the principles of design when executing your piece. Make this a thoughtful well crafted object. Last minute sloppy work is unacceptable and will not be graded!
Step 2
Select your “Readymade”:
Select a found object (or possibly objects) to juxtapose with your textured object. Some manipulation of this found object is permissible it may be in need of “assistance.” However the goal is to alter it as little as possible. It should be as close to “readymade” as possible. One approach to selecting a good readymade is to look for something that already possesses a “history” and or “good” design. Of course some alteration will be necessary to seamlessly connect your two objects.
Step 3
Make the connection:
Devise your connective system. What materials would best connect your objects? One of the goals of this project is to effectively join multiple mediums together in a dynamic, aesthetically integrated manner. Your connective system should transform your two separate objects conceptually or physically into a single unified sculptural object.
